The first Community Based Research Program at Health Canada (CBRC) 'Sex Now Survey' is conducted. Over 1854 men participated in the survey, making it the largest gay men survey in BC to date.

Woodward building is occupied, in protest of the government promising the vacant building would become social housing and then revoking that decision.

Fix: The Story of An Addicted City, which follows the president of the Vancouver Area Network of Drug Users (VANDU, is released.

Human Rights Watch Award is given to the VANDU organization, for Action on HIV/AIDS and Human Rights.

HIV/AIDS is the leading cause of death in sub-Saharan Africa,HIV/AIDS, bringing the life expectancy in sub-Saharan Africa from 62 years to 47 years of life.

The FDA approves the OraQuick Rapid HIV-1 Antibody Test.

The Global Fund launches to boost the response to AIDS, TB and malaria.

The Saskatchewan provincial government publishes a HIV strategy, due to the increasing numbers of HIV cases reported through intravenous drug users.

Robert Trow, co-creator of the Hassle Free Clinic in Ontario, which was one of the first jurisdictions in North America to offer anonymous HIV testing, passes away.
